Lamborghini effectively created the supercar genre with the stunning Miura in the late 1960s. Pursuing such an outstanding design is a possibility that may have paralyzed most designers, but Bertone’s Marcello Gandini was up to the task. The Countach made its debut at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, but Lamborghini’s financial standing as it was (a severe mess), production didn’t begin until 1974. The early cars are the purest expression of Gandini’s vision with their striking proportions, exotic scissor doors, and wild surface handling. One of the key elements that gives them their “Periscopio” designation: a cut-out groove in the roof that allows for a (limited) rear view over the center-mounted V-12.

Although the car today is the same in make and color (Tahiti Blue), at some point in the past a previous owner made a tragic, ill-advised modernization, adding fender flares and rear spoiler, converting it to a flat roof, and re-painting it red. An extensive restoration in 2017 – which is listed in great detail – has returned the car to its original specifications. This Lambo class win at the 2019 Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance is a testament to the quality of the work.
