There’s refreshing honesty in the new Subaru WRX. He remains an obvious descendant of the example he fell in love with enthusiasts 20 years ago. Subaru has stayed true to the original formula, giving the new car a turbocharged all-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, standard manual transmission, and bear-hugging front seats. The engine still ignites when the weather is cold, and the suspension, although a bit softer than before, sometimes punishes. It’s an economy car with a hot rod. It doesn’t even have adjustable driving modes. Don’t like how Subaru is set up? Modify it yourself, or don’t buy it. How refreshing really.

Basic models start at $30,100, and the limited price we tested goes up to $36,990. The engines are identical, so expect any manual WRX to hit 60 in 5.5 seconds and run the quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds at 101 mph. The Skidpad cling came in at 0.95g.
Wait, wasn’t the old WRX faster? Blame the six-speed manual gearbox and the 6100-rpm redline (600 less than before) from the 271-hp 2.4-liter flat-four. 60fps can no longer be reached, so the new WRX requires an additional shift before that speed can be reached. Despite bumping from the 2.0L to the 2.4, the turbo is still a bit behind and with a surprise middle-aged drivers may not appreciate it. However, younger people may like it.

Subaru informed us that there will be no new STI sharing this platform due to consumer interest (and thus resources) turning toward EVs. That’s too bad, because the WRX steers, stops, handles, and can be thrown sideways in addition to any of its predecessors. It looks like a perfect receiver for a 40 or 50 hp injection. Hopefully this WRX won’t be the last affordable primary rally car. We bet the battery-powered WRX will have drive modes.
