Audi aims for fifth R8 LMS win at TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa

  • Five teams for Audi Sport customers race in a 24-hour race
  • Intense competition in the general and category rankings
  • Thirteen drivers from Audi Sport are scheduled to compete

Audi Sport wants customer racing to continue its winning streak at the 74th edition of the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa, July 28-31. Objective: The R8 LMS is already aiming for its third overall victory over the 24-hour period this year. In addition, there are valuable points and decisive championship spots in the AWS-powered Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe, which are at stake for drivers and teams in various categories. At least a dozen Audi R8 LMS cars are set to compete in the world’s largest GT3 race in the Ardennes, Belgium.

“The endurance racing season has been excellent so far, with two wins in the 24 hour race,” says Chris Rinke, Audi Sport Head of Customer Racing. “The performance of the WRT customer team in Dubai in January and Audi Sport Team Phoenix at the Nürburgring in June are already fantastic in The middle of the year. Now, we want to continue our success story at Spa, where we had all-out wins in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2017. Two of the teams that have succeeded there – WRT and Saintéloc Racing – are back with Audi Sport as well as the Attempto Racing and Boutsen teams Racing and Tresor by Car Collection.

The classic Ardennes endurance race, first held in 1924, is a home race for two teams: Boutsen Racing comes from Wavre, about an hour and a half drive from Spa. Led by Olivia Bautzen and Olivier Laine, the outfit has had several participations in the 24 Hours Spa. For the first time, the team is sending an Audi to their Pirates Adam Etke, Benjamin Lesin, Antoine Leclerc and Karim Ojeh in the Gold Class.

The WRT team from Boudor, about 180 kilometers from the track, took their first Audi win at Spa in 2011 and another in 2014. Exactly 20 years ago, team boss Vincent Voss, who was still a racing driver at the time, personally won the award. 24 hour race. The five driver line-up that the Belgian and his team rely on includes two professional Audi Sport Team WRT teams. Kelvin van der Linde, Dries Fanthor and Charles Werts make a powerful combination. At the 2021 Spa 24 Hours, the trio drove a massive race to return from the back of the grid initially to finish runner-up and also dominated the opening of the GT World Challenge Europe season at Imola at the beginning of April. Nico Muller and Frédéric Vervich share notable support: Nine-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi is quickly learning his new trade after switching to motorsports, at least thanks to the pros from Audi. A respectable fifth overall in a field of 53 participants at Le Castellet in early June was the trio’s best result so far this season. WRT is currently second in the endurance team standings, just one point off the leader.

The other three cars from the WRT team also have clear targets: Benjamin Goethe, Jean-Baptiste Semenauer and Thomas Neubauer are second in the silver standings by just two points. Their teammates Finley Hutchison, Diego Menchaca and Louis Proctor are fourth. Brothers Arnold and Maxime Rubin are fifth in the gold standings with Ryoichiro Tomita and share the car with Ulysse de Pauw.

Hannover’s Audi Sport Atembo team, led by Arken Aka, has a previous Spa winner on board: Marcus Winkelhock, winner in 2017, shares the car with this year’s Audi Sport teammates Dennis Marshall and Ricardo Feller. Buccaneers Alex Aka, Juuso Puhakka, Nicolas Schöll and Marius Zug will drive the second Audi from Attempto Racing. They are currently ranked sixth in the Silver Ranking.

France’s Audi Sport Team Saintéloc, 24 Hours Spa winner in 2017, is led by Sebastien Chettel and also has two Audi Sport drivers on board in Christopher Meese and Patrick Niederhauser. They were entered into the Pro classification with young Swiss driver Lucas Légeret. FIA WTCR Audi Sport driver Gil Magnus will share the Saintéloc team’s sister car with Nicolas Bert, Cesar Gazzo and Aurelien Banes – and they are entered into the Silver Class.

Peter Schmidt’s staff is preparing two more GT3 sports cars with the four rings. In the Audi Sport Team Tresor, the team manager trusts two Audi Sport drivers: Mattia Drodi and Christopher Haas, another winner in 2017. They will compete with Luca Ghiotto in the Pro classification, where they are currently ranked seventh. For their fellow Tresor by Car Collection teammates – Daniele Di Amato, Alberto Di Fulco, Pierre Alexandre Jean and Lorenzo Patrice – it’s all about points in the Silver Cup.

Fans can look forward to an exciting race with 65 participants and nine brands. Audi will extensively report on the Great Sports Car Festival in the Ardennes on its social media channels and at The organizer will broadcast the entire scene live on their website:
