If you search for a wordspider“On the interweb you would be amazed at what the search results show up. We have a ski apparel company, a computer programming tool (something to do with Python) and a machine tool company?
Nothing is clear there, so what about that word, which is not in any dictionary, and which seems to excite a lot of sports car manufacturers? And it is, because there are quite a few examples of this, such as:-
- Ferrari GT California Spider
- Porsche Boxster Spyder
- Spyker Preliator Spyder
- Toyota MR2 Spyder
- Ferrari GT California Spider
To name just a full hand.
Well, there is an old anecdote about an Italian auto journalist. Which indicates that in the fifties of the last century he attended an auto show in New York and, as legend has it, called his office to report on the new Porsche 550 Spyder. Its pronunciation for Speeder was somehow translated to “Spyder,” and so we were asked to believe that not only did the magazine run in the name, but also, all of the cars mentioned above (and more) had it inherited by complete error.
Another explanation, perhaps more reasonable, is that it refers to another famous historic convertible. A 19th century horse-drawn carriage that has the appearance of a spider (spider type), with a thin wooden body and large spinning wheels (pictured below).
Oddly enough, this primitive Victorian method of transportation appears to be a creepy crawl, both in appearance and perhaps also in speed.
So, let’s take a look at two really amazing Spiders (from the supercar collection) that are in showrooms right now, Audi R8 Spyder and Lamborghini Huracán Spyder.
If you are thinking of getting a mid-engine supercar, you may well be thinking of one or both of these amazing cars. So without further ado, let’s see how they compare.
Appearance of these Spyders
“Look” should be at the top of the list of typical convertible supercar buyers. Not only can it look good, it has to look amazing. If you’re in the market for one of these cars, you don’t just want them to be eye-catching, you want them to make people jaw dropping as they scramble to get their cell phones to take a selfie with it.
Forgive us for using the word “poser,” but these cars aren’t for the shy and humble types. They’re better suited to the likes of Tony Stark (Iron Man), and they’re usually highly confident individuals who aren’t afraid to go explosively. Speed enthusiasts who often want the same level of attention that their cars get.
When you put the two cars side by side, the Lamborghini is without a doubt the car that immediately catches your eye. It jumps out at you, with its exquisitely sculpted artistic Italian curves and low, wide stance.
Standing next to an Audi, a lambo resembling a raging bull prepares to engage in a fight with a toreador (Audi) at a Spanish bullring. It looks much more aggressive than its German competitor.
But from different angles, Huracán evokes all kinds of images. From the front, it looks like a super cool transforming robot, about to launch in a TV ad. From the side, you get a completely different perspective, Lambo looks more like Sophia Loren (for the younger generation – a beautiful Italian movie star), and flaunts her amazing curves. It is so amazing.
Audi, especially from the front, is much lower. And from a distance, out front and out of earshot, we dare say it, it could even be mistaken for a more modest TT. You won’t quickly realize it’s much more than that until the lateral spike appears.
In red, it could be a young Spanish bullfighter, holding a robe, urging a bull. Slim, athletic, fast, he appears ready to harass a bull with his millisecond responses.
The R8 is a nice looking car, but in the looks category, the Huracán brings more drama and has an extra “Wow” factor and curb appeal, which very likely will catch the eye more. So, in terms of looks, Lambo takes it.

The performance of the Huracán and the R8
A supercar must be fast. It should provide a certain amount of G-Force fun to its occupants. It should return you to the seat when you apply a slight pressure to the accelerator pedal. If not, it’s not a supercar.
In the performance stakes, these cars have a lot in common due to the fact that Audi owns a Lamborghini, and they share components. Both have the same chassis, and identical, 602-hp, 5.2-liter, V10 engines.
So when we start looking at the numbers, it should come as no surprise that these two cars are likely to yield similar results.

There’s no real difference between the two, and since it wouldn’t be fair to penalize a car with as little as a tenth of a second performance advantage (on paper), we call it a tie (so no points awarded here).

How does it look?
Like first-class actors, these cars should not only have a great presence on the stage, but also look good. If they were to appear in front of the audience, they should be able to hold a tune. And boy can these cars sing!
Audi has a steering wheel button for the sport exhaust, which effectively raises the volume, while the Huracan is a natural songbird.
They both have amazingly low ringed voices. The thunderous bang of the V10’s engine is simply magic to your ears. And the wonderful roar they make when accelerating, which just builds and builds, is absolutely amazing. There’s really no need for a stereo system, because when you drop the ceiling, the music they make fills the cabin.
Both cars can reach the high pitches, and get loud squawks as they crank their gears when you really give them some good (push them hard). But the pops and cracks you hear when you take your foot off the throttle, are completely off the chart.
Choosing a winner for this class isn’t easy, but the Lamborghini sounds a little louder, and it has a slightly more aggressive exhaust tone. Therefore, in the vocal category, the Italian rock singer is the winner.

Handling Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan
Driving Experience should be at the top of your tag list. What does the car look like? And how nimble is it on the open road or on the racetrack?
These supercars are designed to be driven by power, they are by no means fashionable fashion accessories, they are highly tuned, race-ready machines that require regular, vigorous exercise.
They both have huge amounts of grip, great braking systems, and when it comes to overall handling, they really can’t be both wrong. Shifting gears is quick and clean in both cars. With such incredible speed and performance, it’s hard to fully test their incredible capabilities without the F1 driver of the day.
Across town and on the racetrack, both deliver precise, controlled, connected and extremely stable drivetrain, in all weather conditions and on nearly all surfaces. It’s really hard to call this one, but the Audi, which is a bit heavier, feels a little more prepared at higher speeds. So, when dealing, by absolute whiskers, we will give it to the Audi.

The internal appearance of these games
When the cameras go out and go down from the top down, the interior of these cars has to match the cool exterior in order to maintain the public’s interest. And both of these cars are really attractive, both inside and out.
Audi offers a great driving position, with a virtual cockpit system and plush leather seats, it’s a very comfortable ride. The large lap counter in the center of the view is a really nice touch, and a joy to watch as it flashes red when you hit the red line. The driver’s vision is great, and everything you need is close at hand. Everything looks good, looks sporty and speaks quality.
The Lamborghini’s interior, especially with its bold color schemes and specific seating, feels more futuristic, as if it were at home on the space shuttle. The multi-colored combination of buttons and switches is sure to give the Italian stallion’s cabin a very modern feel.
But tall drivers may struggle, the cabin feels a little more comfortable than its German rival, and if you have more than six feet, you might be staring at the edge of the windshield.
Therefore, for its rugged, sporty, high-quality and practical design, Audi takes it.

It’s a tie! Both of these cars offer amazing driving experiences on par with their coupe brethren. And if you want a superb vertically-tuned V10, capable of some serious speed, along with epic control, both cars are definitely worth a try.

But, all at once, if you really have to pick one spider out of the two;
Well, if you want a supercar with the appearance of kills, which looks like an angry lion in a feeding frenzy, then the Lambo is very likely to be the best for you.
If you’re the more shy, retired type, and fancy a comfortable, but very fast, great-looking open car, then the Audi R8 is probably for you.
