Land Rover Defender 130 seater eight, priced under $70,000

  • The Defender is revealed as an eight-seat, three-rower that’s 13.4 inches longer than the next smallest member of the Defender family, the 110.
  • Power will come from a choice of two turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines.
  • The longer Defender will start at $69,350.

We’ve known that a three-row version of the Land Rover Defender has been coming for some time; The British SUV brand confirmed the existence of the project last year. We’re now looking at the reality of this greatly expanded version, which will offer three rows of seating and space for eight passengers.

The current Defender 110 came with a part-time third-row option, but the Defender 130 is more spacious, offering eight seats in two, three or three configurations. With an overall length of 211.0 inches, the 130 is 13.4 inches longer than the Defender 110 and 15.9 inches longer than Land Rover’s other three-row SUV, the Discovery. It is mounted on the same 119-inch wheelbase as the Defender 110 – the link between the name 130 and the gap between the axles no longer applies – with the length increasing all in the increased rear. This means usable luggage space even with all seats used. Land Rover claims there’s 13.7 cubic feet of trunk volume with the third row upright; That rises to 43.5 cubic feet with the third row folded and 80.9 cubic feet when the second row collapses as well.

Land Rover says the range will start at $69,350, which is a $14,500 complement to the entry-level Defender 110. But while the model lineup will offer most of the same trim levels as the current Defender, it will be lacking in the base version. Instead, the lineup progresses through the S, SE, X-Dynamic SE and X specs, along with the first fully loaded tree-top version.

    new engine

There wouldn’t be a V-8 option, at least not at all. Land Rover says buyers will be able to choose between two six-cylinder power plants. It’s a little surprising not to have the option of the P300’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder version which we tested and loved in both the 90 and the 110. Instead, Land Rover is launching the 130 with a new P300 powertrain that uses a modified version of the larger six-cylinder engine. 3.0-liter, which delivers an identical peak of 296 horsepower for the four-pot, but accompanied that with more torque of 347 pound-feet. On top of that, a powerful version of the same engine from the P400 delivers the same power as on other Land Rover applications: 395 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. Both motors use a 48-volt hybrid assist. It seems likely that the P300’s six-cylinder engine will also replace the four-cylinder version in other applications.

Land Rover hasn’t released any performance numbers for the Defender 130, but we can safely expect it to be a bit slower than the 110 given the increase in size and weight. We ran the 2020 Defender 110 P400 to 60 mph in an astonishing 6.3 seconds and clocked 14.8 seconds in the quarter mile at 94 mph. Likewise, off-road capability should only be partially compromised by the increase in mass and greater rear overhang.

Land Rover says air suspension will be standard on the Defender 130 in the US, allowing ground clearance to be increased by up to 2.8 inches off-road. Land Rover claims angles of approach, departure and slope above 37.5, 28.5 and 27.8 degrees, respectively; The corresponding numbers for the Defender 110 are 38, 40 and 28 degrees. The maximum wading depth of 35.4 inches is unchanged.

The popularity of both the Defender 90 and Defender 110 makes the Defender 130 an obvious lineup in the family. It certainly looks poised to make the Land Rover Discovery look increasingly tacky when compared to the Defender thanks to its superior space and off-road prowess. It should reach US customers before the end of the year. All that’s left for us is to hope that eventually Land Rover chooses to integrate the 130 with the power of the V-8.
