Due to the regional differences in used car prices, used car shoppers on a budget and willing to travel can increase their chances of getting a good deal. “When you look at the most popular cars on the market, used car prices can vary as much as $14,166 between cities,” said Carl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars. “In today’s market, bargains on used cars are hard to come by, and even after purchasing a plane ticket or taking a road trip, consumers may find it worthwhile to travel to purchase a used car for significant savings.”
iSeeCars analyzed used car prices for the top 25 most popular cars to determine which cities are the most expensive and least expensive.
Used cars with a wide price disparity between the most expensive and least expensive cities
When examining local prices for the most popular cars, vehicles with the largest price discrepancies had a price difference of at least 22 percent between the cheapest and most expensive cities.

The Nissan Rogue is the car with the largest price disparity between the most expensive and least expensive cities. “A used Nissan Rogue costs 32.4 percent or $10,738 less in San Antonio, Texas than it does in Fairbanks, Alaska,” Brawer said. “Even though the distance between these cities is nearly 4,000 miles, you can still save a significant amount of money even after shipping costs, which are likely under $5,000.”
Subaru Forester offers the most savings with the shortest distance between the most expensive and least expensive city. “Shoppers in the Duluth metropolitan area can drive 17 hours to save nearly $8,000,” Brawer said. “Even factoring in a round trip gas that would cost about $300, a hotel costs around $150 a night, or even a round-trip plane ticket for less than $500, traveling to buy this car can generate significant savings.”

iSeeCars has found the cities that offer the most savings on each one of the most popular used cars when compared to the national average.

The Honda Civic in the Lincoln, Nebraska metropolitan area tends to be 17 percent cheaper than the national average, for a savings of $4,794. “The best places to buy popular used cars are all over the country,” Brauer said. “Even if car shoppers find a bargain in their area, it’s worth comparing shopping in other areas to find a better deal.”

It can be difficult to find a bargain on a used car in today’s market, but expanding your search can give consumers the best chance of finding more savings. “Even if you can’t travel into town while saving the most money on your car, you’ll likely find greater savings outside your local area, which makes the travel well worth it,” Brawer said.

iSeeCars.com analyzed over 1.3 million 1-5 year old used cars of the best-selling models sold between January and April of 2022. The average asking price for each model was calculated in each DMA, and the highest and lowest prices were compared. to each other, as well as the average price nationwide. Model/city groups with low inventory were excluded from the analysis.
