The Audi R8 is a two-door ultra-luxury sports car that was a departure from the Audi family. Audi has offered the R8 over time as a coupe and as a convertible, with either a V-8 or V-10 powerhouse, and calls the Lamborghini HurĂ¡can its distant cousin, right across the border via Austria or Switzerland. The R8 has strong German roots. Emphasizes everyday usability and drivability. Lamborghini is full of right angles and bright colors.

However, with its rather beautiful and elegant appearance, the Audi R8 hides an impressive performance. Skipping through 2019, the 2020 Audi R8 has been updated to be a sharper coupe or convertible with more power than before and each model can hit 200 mph.

The rear-wheel drive R8 was added for 2021 and in 2022 it became the R8 Performance RWD with 562 hp instead of 532 hp. Two new packages are offered for the new model, one with a sports exhaust and a dynamic package with carbon-ceramic brakes, unique 20-inch wheels, and racing seats upholstered in Nappa leather.

New Audi R8

The second-generation R8 went on sale in early 2016 as a 2017 model, shown only as a coupe with a V-10 engine. All-wheel drive is back, but the last generation V-8 is gone. The body shape of the car went back to the latest generations.

Unfortunately, Audi has no plans to bring back a manual transmission for the R8.

The latest R8 is based on the new VW Group sports car system’s modular aluminum alloy frame, which has been reinforced with carbon fiber in key areas such as the central tunnel and firewall. This, along with other measures, helps the car save about 110 pounds. There’s more power from the updated V-10 powertrains: 532 hp in the R8 V10 RWD, and 602 hp in the R8 V10 Performance. The V-10 also offers 13 percent better fuel economy thanks to the addition of port fuel injection (it already had direct injection) and cylinder deactivation. Unlike most other Audi models, the R8 retains its normal intake traction engines. The shift tasks are handled exclusively by Audi’s 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The R8 delivers impressive cornering and straight-line performance. The R8 also has a stubborn processor, and features excellent power steering and powerful brakes. Safety-wise, it offers side-impact and curtain airbags, as well as a very solid body structure but doesn’t have automatic emergency brakes. As a supercar, don’t expect the R8 to be crash-tested. All in all, we commend the R8 more for its amazing operation and balanced handling, with reservations expressed for its small cargo space and underpowered rear sights. A standard rearview camera and parking sensors make it easy to back up and park the vehicle.

For 2018, the R8 gets a new Black Optic look package with darker alloy wheels, a black side blade on V10 models, and a few other hints of black, as expected. LED headlights are now standard on the V10 Plus and optional on the V10, while the Audi Sport badge replaces the Quattro badge previously installed on the sports car’s grille.

The R8 skips over the 2019 model year, then gets an update for 2020 with more power and a revised design. For 2021, it added a rear-wheel drive model called the R8 V10 RWD with a 532-horsepower version of the V-10.

History of the Audi R8

The R8 broke cover at the 2006 Paris Motor Show to instant acclaim. Audi has paired its first 2008 R8 with a 4.2-liter, 420-hp midshipper behind the driver and passenger.

Elsewhere, Audi borrowed liberally from a Lambo parts box to create the R8. All-wheel drive was linked to the system on the Lamborghini Gallardo, as was the semi-automatic R tronic gearbox and the standard six-speed manual gearbox. Distinguished from the exotic Lambo models, the Audi R8 features an aluminum frame that gives it an overall length nearly five inches longer than the Gallardo’s – and as a result, much more interior space, not to mention a more sensible interior.

The R8 was carried over to the 2009 model year mostly unchanged. Beginning in 2010, Audi introduced a series of new versions. The first was a V-10 that puts out 525 horsepower and drastically lowers the acceleration numbers below the 4-second mark. A Spyder version was introduced in 2011. Equipped with a V-10 engine and R tronic transmission, and at a much higher price tag than the $150,000 R8 V10 coupe, it was the right choice for those who wanted exclusivity. The Spyder fabric roof was powered by power, although the Spyder lost Coupe’s signature “sideblade” intake covers in the transition.

For 2012, as a sort of swan song for the pre-facelift R8, the GT model was introduced. It weighed 200 pounds less than a comparable V-10 and was tuned to 560 hp, allowing for a 0-60 mph sprint of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph. Only 333 R8 GTs were built for sale worldwide, all of them coupes wearing body kits and spoilers for extra downforce.

Audi skipped 2013 entirely, selling out 2012 models with the updated R8 arriving in early 2013 as a 2014 model. It received some light updates in appearance and some more significant mechanical changes. At the top of the list was a new S tronic dual-clutch transmission that replaced the previous manual (a six-speed manual transmission is still offered). This dual-clutch was exactly what it should have been on the R8 all along, providing manual paddle shift control while also managing almost psychological levels of low gear and automatic position prediction based on the driver’s use of the brakes and throttle.

new The V10 Plus joined the range for 2014It makes 550 horsepower and 110 pounds less than the standard V10 Coupe, but without the extreme sharpness or limited sales targets of the R8 GT.

For 2015, Audi introduced a very small selection of R8 specials. The R8 Competition was based on the V10 Plus engine and provided an additional 20 horsepower. It was produced as a tribute to the LMS racing cars from Audi. The package included special carbon fiber trim, modified aero settings, and other touches. Only 60 were introduced in the US

The 2016 model was not presented as Audi was preparing to launch the 2017 model.
