The Nissan Altima – one of the few remaining mid-size sedans with all-wheel drive available – is updated for 2023. Exterior tweaks include a new front end, redesigned wheels, and two new exterior colors, but these updates take a back seat to the changes inside. Altima technology has been upgraded with an available 12.3-inch touchscreen display, improved connectivity and more active security features for the base model. What hasn’t changed are the sedan’s engine options: a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.

New face, colors and wheels

The new front fascia of the 2023 Altima differentiates it from the 2022 model. All trims get a new grille design and sport the updated Nissan badge; The SR model gets a distinctive black chrome grille. LED headlights with integrated turn signals are now standard.

In addition to the facelift, the Altima 2023 sees new paint colors and wheel options. New paint colors are Gray Sky Pearl and Garnett Pearl Metallic, and the 17- and 19-inch aluminum wheels available on the sedan have new designs.

Powertrains continue

The base 2023 Altima remains the 188-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder, paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and a choice of available all-wheel drive reduces engine power to 182 horsepower.

The available 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine delivers 248 hp on luxury gas (normally 236 hp) for an even more engaging driving experience. This engine is only available on the front-wheel drive SR model. The front-wheel-drive base engine gets the best EPA mileage — up to 32 mpg combined — while the 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 29 mpg combined.

Wireless connection, added security

Aside from the updated SR model’s upholstery, the most notable changes within the 2023 Altima are technology and safety upgrades. A new 12.3-inch dashboard touchscreen is optional, replacing the 8-inch touchscreen as the car’s largest display. Newly available Apple CarPlay wireless charging and wireless device charging. Wired Android Auto will continue to be available until 2023.

The Altima’s safety and driver assistance features remain mostly unchanged, but the base model gets some attention in this department. The Nissan Safety Shield 360 is now standard, including on the base S, and includes features like blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic emergency brake—all features previously optional on the base Altima. The SL and SR VC-Turbo trims also get a 360-degree camera system for 2023.

Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, a practical driving system that includes full-speed adaptive cruise control and lane-centered steering assistance, is included on the SL and SR VC-Turbo trims and is optional for the SV; Other decors miss technology.

Decorations, pricing and release date

The Nissan Altima 2023 will be offered in five variants: S, SV, SR, SL and SR VC-Turbo (the range-topping platinum model is no longer available).

Pricing for the Altima 2023 will be announced closer to its expected arrival date in the fall. Altima 2022 starts at $25,925 for the base 2.5s while the 2.5 Platinum costs $35.625 (all prices include destination); SR 2.0 turbo engine starts at $32,275.
