rice city – A one-car rollover indirectly caused a three-vehicle collision after a sedan driver wound up behind as he prepared to move in slow traffic on Monday afternoon.
At approximately 1:53 p.m., the Utah Highway Patrol responded to reports of a rollover near mile 92 on Interstate 15. A Honda Civic was heading south when its tire burst. UHP Sgt. Bambi Bay said the driver over-corrected and overturned the car.
A Chevrolet Suburban was approaching the area as traffic was slowing. Reportedly, the driver looked left to see if she could pass a Honda Accord and get it out of the rear, which was pushed into the front tire of a Ford F150. Bay said the Accord and F-150 both stopped average and the Suburban came to rest on the right shoulder.
Civic riders were taken to hospital in a Gold Cross ambulance with minor injuries and in good condition, it was reported.
Bai said the vehicles in the subsequent accident were all one occupant, and there were no reports of injuries.
Bai said there were no signs at the scene, and the incident was still under investigation. UHP has received reports of a reckless driver traveling at high speed while weaving in and out of traffic, which may be a contributing factor to the secondary collision.
To avoid overturning caused by blown tires, Bey said he relieves gas rather than applying pressure on the brakes, stressing the importance and slowly reducing speed.
“A lot of people – it scares them, and this is justified,” she said. “It makes them nervous and so they overreact. And that brake slamming or evasive movement on the steering wheel is what contributes to a lot of rollovers.”
Additionally, Bey suggests that individuals take steps to ensure their equipment is in top condition, especially when an area experiences high temperatures.
The Iron County Police Department, Parwan Police Department, Paragonian Fire Department and Parwan Fire Department also responded to the call.
