The list below ranks the 12 best SUVs for 2022 models by specific maximum towing ratings, with a lower base price used to break any ties. For 2021 – but not necessarily in previous years, when some manufacturers used in-house calculations – the ratings should be comparable because SUVs are rated according to Performance Standard SAE International J2807, a comprehensive procedure for determining gross vehicle weight estimates (GCWR) and trailer weight ratings. It also defines consistent parameters such as, for example, two occupants with a specific weight and a common set of options.
Note that these ratings are advertised as extreme for ideal conditions and usually require a heavy-duty towing package or other options and an appropriate coupling. Maximum real-world towing capacity will be reduced by passenger and cargo load, as well as by additional optional equipment, including, in some cases, all-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. We have more details below the list on how to determine the safe maximum for your position.

Realistic loads weigh what you can tow
Even under the J2807 standard, the maximum trailer weight rating for an SUV assumes little extra weight from passengers or cargo. Load your SUV or outfit it with extra heavy options and this extra weight will reduce maximum safe towing capacity.
You can calculate this safe limit in three steps:
- Determine the tare weight of your SUV, including all accessories. The automaker’s posted curb weights are a starting point, but the trim level for SUVs and special equipment may vary. Colleagues at sister site Cars.com say PickupTrucks.com A better idea is to use a scale at your local truck station or state department of motor vehicles to get a more accurate weight for your vehicle.
- Subtract this weight from your SUV’s Combined Gross Weight Rating (GCWR), which can usually be found on a sticker on the driver’s door or pillar, or in your manual. The difference is the total added weight your SUV can carry and tow – the total available weight capacity.
- Subtract from the total available weight capacity the expected payload weight of people and goods you will be carrying in the SUV for the trip plus the weight of the trailer tongue (the weight that the trailer can hold behind the SUV). What remains is the actual maximum trailer weight you can safely tow for this trip.
You can move pounds from one side of the equation to the other, for example by transferring some of the weight of the payload to the trailer, but keep in mind that you can never safely overtake it. also Maximum Weight Ratings in SUVs – Maximum towing capacity or maximum payload, which is usually located on the tire label on the driver’s door or pillar.
